ROMANIA - Following efforts by the Romanian Meat Association (ARC) which has been calling on the country’s government to reduce the value-added tax (VAT) on meat, the recently released new draft of the country’s Tax Code states that the VAT on meat, fish, vegetables and fruit will be lowered 24 per cent to nine per cent starting in 2016.The industry association says that the measure would allow to lower the prices of meat and processed meat products by at least 20 per cent. In addition to this, industry representatives say that the proposed measure would facilitate the government’s efforts to tackle tax evasion, which is widely spread in the country’s meat sector.
